What occurs next if the least described blur of human emotion, complicated by fatigue, that is often so confusing a transition that most of us attempt to suppress the memory of early struggles we faced when “paying our dues”. Somehow, we get used to it. The process of medical education becomes strangely routine at times. Though we may have lingering feelings that our lifestyle is unhealthy, we mentally bribe ourselves to keep going or use an assortment of partially mal-adaptive coping skills to continue our training.
Eustress, distress, fatigue and burnout can be viewed as a continuum, not as clearly segregated entities. Stress management training and prevention programs have been described with some success, but licensing authorities and our new era of accountability strongly discourage physicians from seeking help. It’s a sink or swim mentality, unless you’re in a handful of the physician health-friendly training environments (4.9)
